I arrived in the United States in 1987. I first arrived in California and then in Minnesota. In California we lasted about 10 years and the main reason we were there was because my oldest daughter was born with a congenital problem. Out of many doctors in Mexico, none of them wanted to treat her and we went with many doctors and they all told me that they had to remove everything she had been born with. She was born with a giant mole starting from the back, it was black with hair, to her whole body. She could not grow with that because with time it would be cancer. We went with many doctors and nothing. I have a cousin who is in Minnesota right now, he is a doctor. Then, as he came to the United States and he knows how to speak English, he told me to go to La Piedad to see if doctors from San Diego, California would see my child. They operated her on three occasions but it became impossible and my daughter needed more surgeries. For this reason we had to come to the United States. My husband was a teacher and I had my hair salon. We arrived in Osca, California where my cousins lived and worked in the strawberry field. My husband and I worked there for about four years. We left everything and then in about four months we decided to bring the girls. We wanted to know how life was here before we brought my two daughters. Thanks to our work in the field, we qualified for a program that helped children born with congenital problems. At Children's Hospital my daughter was operated 11 more times. At the age of 15, she was discharged and when she was discharged we returned to Mexico. We were already tired of so much time in the hospital and operations, but thanks to God and this country they helped my daughter and us. Before going to Mexico again, while working in the field there was an amnesty. But when we returned to Mexico we saw that our daughters had more of a future here. We came to Minnesota in 2001 to work in what was formerly JBS, Swift, and I worked there for 5 years. I then work at for the school district. Right now I'm working in Highland where my husband works too.
One comes to work, to fight, to get ahead to help also the family that one has in Mexico. I am already old, but my children here have a great future. They also already have their family with my grandchildren. I do not have anyone else here other than them so why would I return to my home country.
A los Estados Unidos llegue en el año 1987. Primero llegue en California y después en Minnesota. En California duramos como 10 años y la razón principal que llegamos allí era porque mi hija mayor nació con un problema congénito. Todos los doctores de México, ninguno quería tratarla y anduvimos con muchos doctores y todos me decían que le tenían que quitar todo con lo que había nacido. Ella nació con un lunar gigantesco desde en la espalda, era negro con cabello, hasta en todo el cuerpo. Y no podía crecer con eso porque con tiempo era cáncer. Anduvimos con muchos doctores y nada. Entonces yo tengo un primo que ahorita está en Minnesota, él es doctor. Entonces como el se vino a los Estados Unidos y sabe hablar en Ingles me dijo que fuera a La Piedad haber si doctores de San Diego, California me veían a la niña. La operaron en tres ocasiones pero después no se pudo y la niña necesitaba más cirugías. Por esta razón nos tuvimos que venir a los Estados Unidos. Mi esposo era profesor y yo tenia mi salón. Llegamos a Osca, California donde vivían mis primos y trabajaban en el campo de fresa. Y yo allí trabaje como unos cuatro años y mi esposo también. Dejamos todo entonces en un lapso, como cuatro meses, nos regresamos para traer las niñas. No queríamos traer las niñas antes de saber como era aquí. No las trajimos y trabajamos en el campo. Gracias a que trabajamos en el campo calificamos para un programa que ayudaba los niños que nacían con problemas congénitos. En el Children's Hospital la operaron 11 veces más. A la edad de 15 años le dan de alta, y cuando le dan de alta ya nos regresamos para México. Ya estábamos cansados de tanto hospital y operaciones pero gracias a Dios y a este país ayudaron a mi hija y a nosotros. Antes de irnos a México otra vez, tuvimos la oportunidad de estar trabajando en el campo cuando hubo una amnistiá. Pero cuando regresamos a México vimos que nuestras hijas tenían más futura para aca. Y llegamos a Minnesota en 2001 a trabajar en lo que era antes JBS, la Swift y trabaje allí por 5 años. Y luego trabaje en la escuela para el distrito. Y ahorita estoy trabajando en Highland donde también mi esposo trabaja.
Uno viene a trabajar, a luchar, a salir adelanta para ayudar también la familia que uno tiene en México. Yo ya estoy grande pero mis hijos aquí tienen mucho futuro. Y ellos también ya tienen su familia con mis nietos. No tengo a nadie más aquí que ellos entonces porque me regresaría para atrás.
